Hundreds come out for winter golf

Barring any snow, Painted Hills Golf Course is open all year, and with warm temperatures on Monday the course was packed with players in the middle winter.

Hundreds of golfers spent the day there, enjoying what might be best described as spring conditions.

Painted Hills was a popular place to be on Monday, and by mid-afternoon the course ran out of tee times. In all 80 rounds of golf were played Monday.

Even before they tee off golfers were happy to be out on the grass enjoying warm temperatures.

"Its just gorgeous, middle of January, you cant beat that," said golfer Rick Sausville.

A bucket of balls, goes nicely with a sky full of sunshine.

"Its probably great on the ski slopes, but its probably better on the golf course," said course owner Tim McElhinney.

Inside the clubhouse, it seems the weather was all anyone could talk about.

"They're saying they can't believe they're able to do this in January," McElhinney said.

Most golfers say it's mother nature's reprieve after last year's sub-par winter, which closed the course from December straight through to March.

"This time last year, I was standing in the same spot and I had to park out on the street because I couldn't get the car in the parking lot. We were snowed in. 32 inches of snow on the ground," McElhinney said.

Most golfers on Monday agreed it was much better wheeling golf clubs around than a snow blower.

"Got a real sore back shoveling snow last year, this year my back's a little better," Sausville said.

His back, and everyone's attitude were feeling good as a little dose of sunshine goes a long way in January.

"It will be a lot easier to go back to work tomorrow, that's for sure," Sausville said.

The owner of Painted Hills G.C. says tee times are filling up quickly for the rest of the week, so if you want to get out then call to make your reservation.

Prices are just $10 for nine holes, or $15 for 18 holes.
