HELLS CANYON, ID -- Living along Hells Canyon may sound a bit too isolated for most, but it's a slice of heaven for one couple, who share their home with about 4,000 people every year.
Cari-Dawn and Mike Luther work in an inhospitable place with an inhospitable name: Hells Canyon.
The area is home to the deepest river gorge in North America, where the Snake River divides the states of Oregon and Idaho.
Four miles down river from Pittsburgh Landing, on the Idaho bank of the Snake River, is the Kirby Creek Lodged -- home to the Luthers.
"People think that we have nothing to do and its quiet and peaceful, but we share our house with 4,000 people a year," Cari-Dawn said.
"We get them from all over the United States, but the ones from Australia, Germany, China, Japan... stuff like that, they've come a long way to do this," Mike said. "Some of them flew over here 22 hours in an airplane to see Hells Canyon."
Specifically, people come from all over the world to experience the class four and five rapids that Mike runs his Snake River Adventures Boogie Boat through to the delight of all.
"It's a ride going up, but when you are coming down you do not know what to expect and when that wall of water is coming at you it's like ‘HOLY COW!!' Cari-Dawn said.
One section of the rapid is called Granite Creek and Mike has been running it since 1976.
"I think I'm a pretty lucky person to have this place and live here. People have asked me several times, ‘why don't you just sell out and go on vacation?' But I'm doing what I like to do, this is what I want to do," Mike said.
"It's awesome. It's awesome. It's the best place on earth to live. This is heaven in hell. It's great," Cari-Dawn said.
